European Parliament imposes stricter rules for clean groundwater

The European Parliament has managed to negotiate a groundwater directive which imposes stricter measures on member states to prevent inputs of hazardous substances into groundwater and to better protect this prime source of drinking water.

The aim of the directive will be to protect groundwater against pollution and deterioration and seeks to harmonise methods for measuring potential hazardous substances. The main point of the directive is to ensure that groundwater is protected as a prime source of drinking water - especially against pesticides pollution. This will require changes in certain farming practices for which the Members of the European Parliament have managed to secure compensation through the Common Agricultural Policy regulation.

Bill Newton Dunn, Liberal Democrat MEP the East Midlands, welcomed the directive, saying:

"Groundwater is our most important natural resource and we need to ensure that there are common European measures that protect these against pollution. The directive does not prevent the member states from imposing even stricter measure and will hopefully provide a good incentive to keep groundwater as clean as possible which a major concern for consumers in the East Midlands."
